Why We Use A Mobile LaboratoryThe chain of events that result from the initial locating of an artifact (cultural resource) in the Field requires critical handling and recordation. Typically, while still in the Field, the artifact(s) must be placed in the appropriate container and then to sent a distant laboratory for cleaning, cataloging, labeling, analyses, and finally, curation.
Some of the serious problems inherent in the "typical" scenario are the location, condition, and protection of the artifacts. Many artifacts are unstable or delicate and cannot tolerate mishandling or adverse atmospheric conditions. When a Project is ongoing, and the laboratory is not on site, many artifacts end up in someone's car trunk, motel room, "…in a bag, somewhere?" unprotected from hostile elements, or even more tragic, misplaced - sometimes forever.
CRC uses a fully equipped, self-contained, Mobile Laboratory in the Field because we can easily avoid all of these logistical problems. The artifact goes directly from the excavation unit to the Laboratory, where the preservation requirements are carefully adhered to, and the possibility for damage or loss is greatly minimized.
As artifacts are presented to the Mobile Laboratory Technician, they are inventoried, cleaned, cataloged, labeled, and then carefully packaged in vacuum sealed bags before being placed in airtight/watertight ABS shipping containers and shipped to the appropriate special Analysis facility, or to CRC's Main Laboratory. This means all artifacts are treated appropriately, fully inventoried, and prepared for shipping before ever leaving the Field Site.
All computers, photographic, GPS, and electronic equipment, tools, field equipment and lab supplies - everything needed on any Project is also contained within the same 7' X 17' enclosed trailer as the completely outfitted Laboratory "white room." Moreover, we are able to respond to any urgent or emergency requirement immediately!
